How to restore a photo
Scan or photograph the print as flatly as you can, in even light, filling as much of the frame as possible. A phone camera is fine.

What it repairs
Surface damage first, the scratches, dust and fold lines that come from decades in a drawer or an album.
Then tone, bringing back contrast in washed out prints and correcting the yellow or magenta cast that old colour film picks up.
Grain and noise are softened, though a genuinely grainy negative keeps some texture, which usually looks right.
What it will not do
It does not invent people, backgrounds or objects that were never in the photo, and it is told not to modernise the scene.
A large missing corner is guesswork, not restoration. Crop it out or accept that the fill is an approximation rather than history.
Looking after the originals
Always keep the untouched scan. A restoration is a new interpretation of the photo, not a replacement for the record.
