What quality to expect

YouTube stores audio separately from the picture, usually as an AAC or Opus track. The MP3 you get is built from that track, so it is as close to the source as the platform allows.

A talk or podcast sounds identical to the original. Music can lose a little sparkle compared with a proper streaming service, because YouTube already compressed it once before you ever pressed play.

When you are allowed to do this

YouTube's terms allow downloading with the rights holder's permission or through their own offline feature. That covers your own uploads, material published under an open licence, work that is out of copyright, and anything you have been given permission to reuse.

It does not cover pulling commercial music you have not paid for. If you want a song for keeps, buy it or stream it from a service that licenses it.

What the source audio really is

YouTube does not store an MP3 anywhere. It keeps Opus and AAC tracks, and an MP3 is created from one of those at the moment you ask for it.

That means the MP3 is a second generation file. For speech the difference is inaudible, and for music it is the reason a track can sound very slightly flatter than the same song on a music service that started from the master.

If your player handles M4A, the AAC track is the more faithful choice because it skips the extra conversion step. MP3 wins on compatibility with older car stereos and cheap players.

Sizes and what fits where

A four minute song lands around 4 MB. An hour long podcast is roughly 55 to 70 MB, and a three hour lecture recording can pass 200 MB.

Those numbers are a tenth of what the video costs, which is the whole point of pulling audio only when the picture adds nothing.

Storage on a phone is the practical limit rather than any cap here. A hundred podcast episodes is a few gigabytes.

Getting the file into a music app

On iPhone the MP3 saves into Files. The Files app can move it into any player that reads local audio, and the Apple Music app imports it once it is in your library on a Mac.

On Android the file lands in Downloads, and most players scan that folder automatically. A restart of the player is sometimes needed before a fresh file appears.

Tags matter more than people expect. A downloaded MP3 carries little or no artist and title data, so a tag editor is worth ten minutes if you are building a real library.

Where the rights actually sit

Your own uploads, Creative Commons material, public domain recordings and anything the rights holder has told you to take are all clearly fine.

Commercial music is not, even when the video is free to watch. The advertising on that page is how the artist gets paid, and pulling the audio removes them from the transaction.

Lectures, conference talks and interviews sit in the middle. Many are posted precisely so people can listen offline, but a paid course posted without permission is still somebody else's work.
