How to download Reddit videos with sound
If you have ever saved a Reddit clip and played back total silence, nothing was broken. Reddit serves the picture and the sound as two separate streams and a plain save only grabs the first one. Paste the post link below to get one MP4 with both.
Why Reddit videos come out silent
Reddit hosts video on its own player, v.redd.it, and stores the video track and the audio track as separate files so it can adapt quality on the fly.
A right click and Save video as, or a screen recording app that grabs the source, only picks up the video track. The audio file is sitting at a different address entirely, so nothing tells your player to fetch it.
Getting the version with sound
Open the post, hit Share and copy the link. Old.reddit, new Reddit and short redd.it links all work.
Paste it above and press Download, then pick the file labelled with sound. Both tracks are combined before the download reaches you, so it plays normally everywhere.
Crossposts, GIFs and gallery posts
A crosspost resolves to the original video, so it downloads exactly the same way.
When a post is really a GIF rather than a video, the source GIF is offered directly. Gallery posts list each item on its own so you can pick the one you want.
Why Reddit splits the two tracks in the first place
Reddit serves video through DASH, a streaming format that keeps each quality of the picture in its own file and the sound in yet another. The player decides which pieces to pull as your connection changes, which is why a clip sharpens up a second after it starts.
That design is good for streaming and terrible for saving. A browser save reaches for the single file under the player, and the single file is picture only.
Muxing is the step that puts them back together into one MP4. It is a container level operation, so nothing is re-encoded and the picture is bit for bit what Reddit stored.
Old posts and posts that never had sound
Some Reddit videos genuinely have no audio track. A converted GIF uploaded as a video is the usual case, and there is nothing to attach because nothing was recorded.
You can tell the two apart before downloading. A truly silent post shows no speaker icon in the Reddit player, while a post with sound shows the icon and a volume slider.
Very old v.redd.it posts, from the years before Reddit standardised its encoder, sometimes store audio at a lower bitrate than the picture deserves. That is the stored file, not a fault in the download.
Links from every version of Reddit
New Reddit, old.reddit.com, the sh.reddit interface and a bare redd.it short link all point at the same post id, so any of them resolves.
A comment permalink works too, because it still carries the post id, but the video that comes back is the post's video rather than anything inside the comment.
A link copied from the mobile app sometimes carries tracking parameters after a question mark. They are harmless and can be left in place.
Reposting a Reddit clip elsewhere
Most Reddit videos were not filmed by the person who posted them, so the account you found it on is rarely the rights holder. Credit is genuinely hard to trace on that platform.
For anything public facing, look for the original source in the comments before you repost. Reddit threads usually surface it within the first few replies.
Subreddit rules also vary. Some communities forbid reposting their content off site altogether, and that rule sits on top of anything copyright says.
Questions people ask
Why is there also a video only option?
Some people want the picture without the audio, for example when they plan to lay their own soundtrack over it. The file marked with sound is the one most people want.
Do private subreddits work?
No. Posts in a private subreddit need an approved account, so the link cannot be opened from outside.
Are NSFW posts supported?
Public NSFW posts resolve normally. Please respect the rules of the subreddit and the person who posted.
Can I get just the audio?
Yes, the Audio tab in the results carries an MP3 of the sound track.
Why does the file play with sound here but silently on my phone?
A few older phone players ignore the second audio track in a muxed file. Playing it in VLC or a modern browser confirms the sound is there, and re-saving through a converter fixes stubborn players.
Can I download a video from a Reddit comment?
Videos posted inside comments are usually hosted elsewhere, for example on Imgur or Streamable. Paste that host's link rather than the Reddit permalink.
What resolution do Reddit videos come in?
Reddit encodes up to 1080p and often stores 720p and 480p copies alongside it. The best available is offered, and a low resolution upload cannot be raised past what was stored.
Do crossposted videos count against the original poster?
Nothing about a download reaches either account. There is no notification and no effect on the post's score or view count.
