Vimeo video downloader
Film work, showreels and client edits live on Vimeo, so a Vimeo video downloader is really about preserving quality. Public videos resolve to whatever the creator published, up to 4K when it was uploaded that way. Creators can also lock a video behind a password or a domain rule, and those choices are respected here rather than worked around. Files save free as MP4, up to 4K when the uploader offered it.

What quality Vimeo actually serves
Vimeo is built for creators who control distribution, so downloads depend on the privacy setting the uploader chose. Public videos expose a clean progressive ladder, often at higher bitrate than YouTube.
| Format | What to expect |
|---|---|
| MP4 up to 4K | When the creator uploaded at that size and left downloads open. |
| MP4 1080p | The standard rung, usually a noticeably better encode than social platforms. |
| MP3 audio | Clean, since Vimeo compresses audio less aggressively. |
| Thumbnail JPG | The poster frame the creator selected. |
Vimeo on mobile versus desktop
On your phone
- 1.Tap Share, then Copy link. The link is vimeo.com followed by a number.
- 2.Paste it above in your browser.
- 3.Choose the highest rung offered, the file is worth it on Vimeo.
On a computer
- 1.Copy the numeric video URL from the address bar.
- 2.Paste it above and press Download.
- 3.Unlisted links with a hash still resolve as long as you have the full URL.
Why a Vimeo download sometimes fails
A password protected video fails
Vimeo checks the password server side before releasing the file, so a logged out fetch cannot reach it.
A domain locked embed will not resolve
Creators can restrict playback to specific sites. Those videos only play from the allowed domain.
It says the video is private
Private and team only settings block outside access entirely, which is the whole point of the setting.
Good to know before you save from Vimeo
Creator download settings matter
Vimeo lets each creator decide whether a video can be downloaded. Public videos usually save, while videos set to private, or hidden behind a password, cannot.
Video to textSeveral resolutions to pick from
Vimeo often keeps several sizes of an upload, such as 360p, 720p and 1080p. When more than one is offered, pick the size that matches where you will watch it.
Compress a videoEmbedded Vimeo players on other sites
If a Vimeo video plays inside another website, copy the vimeo.com link from the player menu or the share button, then paste that here.
Convert a video formatVimeo Frequently asked questions
Can I download a password protected video?
No. A password means the creator chose to restrict it, and that restriction is respected.
Do private or unlisted links work?
Unlisted videos that play without a login usually resolve. Anything requiring an account does not.
Is 4K really available?
Only when the creator uploaded and published a 4K version. Where they did, it appears at the top of the list.
What about videos embedded on another site?
Use the address on vimeo.com itself rather than the page holding the embed.
Can I get my own old upload back?
Yes, if it is public. This is a common reason people come here after losing the original file.
Does the creator get notified?
No. Vimeo reports plays, not saves, and nothing is opened on your behalf inside your account.
Why does Vimeo quality look better than YouTube?
Vimeo compresses less on upload, so the stored file keeps more bitrate at the same resolution.
Do unlisted videos work?
Yes, if you have the complete link including the hash. Unlisted means hidden from search, not access controlled.
