YouTube thumbnail downloader

Every YouTube video keeps its cover image on Google's own image servers in four fixed sizes. Paste a video link, a Short link or the bare video id, and take whichever one you need as a JPG.

How to download a YouTube thumbnail

Copy the video address from the browser bar, or use Share and Copy link inside the app. Paste it in the box above and press Get thumbnail.

Four previews appear, from 1280x720 down to 320x180. Click the JPG button under the size you want and the file saves through your browser.

Which size should you pick

Max resolution, 1280x720, is the file YouTube shows on a TV or a full width player. It is the right choice for a mockup, a blog header or a thumbnail study.

The smaller sizes are what YouTube itself serves in search rows and sidebars. They load faster and are fine when the image sits in a small card.

Not every video has the max resolution file. Older uploads and some Shorts stop at 640x480, and the big tile comes back blank when that is the case.

Shorts, live streams and playlists

A Shorts link works exactly like a normal video link, since a Short is still a video with a cover image behind it.

Live streams and premieres keep a cover too, so they resolve the same way. A playlist link does not, because a playlist has no single cover, so paste one video from it instead.

What you can do with a downloaded thumbnail

Thumbnails are part of the creator's work and carry the same copyright as the video. Studying a competitor's covers, building a moodboard or making a private mockup is normal practice.

Republishing someone's thumbnail as the face of your own content, or selling it, is not. If you want a cover that looks like theirs, take the idea and shoot your own.

Questions people ask

Is the YouTube thumbnail downloader free?

Yes. There is no account, no payment step and no daily limit.

Why is the 1280x720 preview blank?

That size only exists when the creator uploaded a cover at least that large. When it is missing, use the 640x480 file instead, which every video has.

Can I get the thumbnail of a private or unlisted video?

Unlisted videos work if you have the link. Private videos do not, because their images are not served publicly.

What format is the download?

JPG, exactly as YouTube stores it. Nothing is re-encoded on the way to you.

Do you keep the images?

No. The file passes straight through to your device and nothing is written to our storage.
