Which size should you pick
Max resolution, 1280x720, is the file YouTube shows on a TV or a full width player. It is the right choice for a mockup, a blog header or a thumbnail study.
The smaller sizes are what YouTube itself serves in search rows and sidebars. They load faster and are fine when the image sits in a small card.
Not every video has the max resolution file. Older uploads and some Shorts stop at 640x480, and the big tile comes back blank when that is the case.
Shorts, live streams and playlists
A Shorts link works exactly like a normal video link, since a Short is still a video with a cover image behind it.
Live streams and premieres keep a cover too, so they resolve the same way. A playlist link does not, because a playlist has no single cover, so paste one video from it instead.
What you can do with a downloaded thumbnail
Thumbnails are part of the creator's work and carry the same copyright as the video. Studying a competitor's covers, building a moodboard or making a private mockup is normal practice.
Republishing someone's thumbnail as the face of your own content, or selling it, is not. If you want a cover that looks like theirs, take the idea and shoot your own.
Every thumbnail exists in several sizes
YouTube stores a set of fixed renditions for each video rather than one image. The largest is the maxres copy at 1280 by 720, then come the high, medium and default copies that shrink in steps.
The maxres copy only exists when the uploader supplied an image at least that large. Older videos and phone uploads often stop at 640 by 480, which is why some results list fewer sizes than others.
Picking the biggest available copy is almost always right. Scaling a small rendition up in an editor adds blur that was never in the source.
What the frames labelled 1, 2 and 3 are
Alongside the chosen thumbnail, YouTube keeps three automatic stills pulled from roughly a quarter, a half and three quarters of the way through the video.
They are useful when the uploader picked a text heavy cover and you want a clean frame of the actual footage instead.
These stills are always generated, even on videos with a custom cover, so they give you a plain look at the content.
Using someone else's cover
A thumbnail is part of the upload and belongs to whoever made it, the same as the video itself.
Reference, commentary, a reaction cover or a link preview on your own site are ordinary uses. Reposting the image as your own cover is not.
For a channel you run, saving the old cover before replacing it is the simplest way to keep a version you can roll back to.
