How to download Instagram reels
Instagram gives you a Save button that only bookmarks a reel inside the app. If you want the actual file on your device, copy the link and paste it below.
Copy the reel link
Open the reel, tap the three dots or the paper plane, then Copy link. On desktop, the URL in the address bar works just as well.
The link looks like instagram.com/reel/ followed by a short code. That is all we need.
Download the MP4
Paste the link in the box above and press Download. Pick the MP4 and the file saves through your browser.
On iPhone the file lands in Files or Photos depending on your Safari settings. On Android it goes to Downloads.
Audio, covers and carousels
The Audio tab carries the reel's sound as an MP3, which is handy when you want the track rather than the clip.
Carousel posts list every item separately, so you can pick a single photo or video out of a set instead of taking the whole thing.
Quality, and why it sometimes looks softer

What a reel link actually contains
A reel is stored as one MP4 with the audio muxed in, plus a separate cover JPG that Instagram generates from the first clean frame. When a link resolves you get both, listed separately, so you can take the cover for a thumbnail without saving the whole video.
Reels published from a scheduled post or a cross post from Facebook carry the same structure, so a reel that shows the small Facebook credit line still resolves the same way.
Quality you should expect back
Instagram re-encodes every upload on its side. A reel filmed in 4K comes back as 1080 by 1920 at roughly 3 to 5 Mbps, because that is the file Instagram itself stores and serves. No tool can hand you the original camera file.
Older reels, anything from before the 2022 encoder change, often top out at 720 by 1280. That is the ceiling of the stored copy rather than a limit on this page.
A thirty second reel usually lands between 4 and 12 MB, which is small enough to send over WhatsApp without further compression.
Reels, stories and carousels are not the same thing
A reel link looks like instagram.com/reel/CODE. A feed video uses instagram.com/p/CODE, and a carousel uses the same shape while holding up to twenty items, each returned as its own file.
Story links expire after twenty four hours and use a different address, instagram.com/stories/username/ID. Use the story downloader for those, since a story link pasted here resolves only while the story is still live.
Credit the creator when you repost
Saving a reel for offline viewing is a private act. Reposting it is publishing, and Instagram treats an uncredited repost as a copyright matter between you and the original account.
The safe habit is to tag the original handle in the caption and leave the on screen credit intact. Most creators are happy to be reposted and unhappy to be scraped.

Creators can set a custom grid cover that is not a frame from the video. The file offered here is the frame Instagram stores with the reel itself.
Does saving a reel show up in the creator's insights?
No. Instagram counts saves made with the bookmark button inside the app. Opening the link elsewhere is an ordinary view at most.
